           Potential of the Solar Energy

The solar energy is the energy produced by the sun through nuclear fusion, which is also partially
radiated as electromagnetic energy in direction of our earth.
The intensity of the solar irradiation above the atmosphere is within longer time intervals relatively
constant, and it has a value of ca. 1.367 kW/m
2 (solar constant).
A part of this solar irradiation is absorbed by the components of the atmosphere, and another part
is reflected back into the world space.
Till to the earth surface still penetrates a mean radiation power of around 1 kW/m
2.
This radiation power depends in first row on the atmospheric conditions  - such as humidity of the
air, cloudiness and particles in suspension. The daily variation of the radiation power is obviously
influenced by the season and by the location’s latitude as well.
Through the addition of the radiation power from all the sun hours of an year we obtain the solar
energetic potential of a region ( in kWh/m
2 ).
On the map below is represented the approx. distribution of the solar-energy potentials on earth.
There from is visible that the usable energy potential in North Africa is two times higher than that
in Central Europe. The necessary energy for Europe could be produced alone in the Sahara.
Other very favorable locations for big solar power plants are the Southwest of the United States,
Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Egypt, Namibia, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the Northwest of Australia, et al.
If we install in this regions solar converters (efficiency factor ca. 40 %), then from a surface of
           ca. 16 km
2 can be attained the same amount of energy (14,000 GWh/a) as from a conventional
large power plant with an installed power of 2000 MW (utilization factor 80 %).
Until now has been installed merely in South California a solar-thermal power of about 400 MW.
But, according to all the forecasts, the solar energy will be already dominating by 2030.
